SHIKOKU | Zen Hiker issue
This special English-language edition of PAPERSKY takes you on a journey around Shikoku’s legendary Zen Trail — a 1,200 km pilgrimage route established over 1,250 years ago by Buddhist monk Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi). Walking with poet Ito Kon, we follow the trail through all four prefectures, each representing a stage of spiritual progress:
Tokushima = Awakening / Kōchi = Training / Ehime = Enlightenment / Kagawa = Nirvana.
The trail connects 88 temples and guides hikers through lush landscapes, local food traditions, and quiet moments of reflection. It offers both physical challenge and spiritual reward.

弘法⼤師・空海が開創したと伝えられる、四国⼋⼗⼋ヶ所霊場をめぐるお遍路巡礼。第⼀札所のある徳島は「発⼼」、⾼知は「修⾏」、愛媛は「菩提」、⾹川は「涅槃」の道場とされ、仏教の修⾏を通して悟りに⾄る道として、古くから多くの修⾏者、巡礼者が歩いてきました。今号のPAPERSKYでは、歴史ある信仰の道を「Zen Trail（禅トレイル）」ととらえ、禅ハイカーとして四国を歩く旅を特集。
近年、アメリカのアパラチアントレイルや、スペインのサンティアゴ巡礼、熊野古道などのロングトレイルを歩くことが、愛好家だけでなく、旅⾏者の間でも⼈気を集めています。歩くことを通じてその⼟地の⾃然や⽂化にふれる深い体験が求められているのかもしれません。今回の特集でも、四国⼋⼗⼋ヶ所霊場のトレイル沿いにある、⾃然、歴史、⼈々、⾷、ものづくりにも⽬を向け、新たな⽂化体験を楽しみながら巡礼の道を辿ります。旅のゲストは、歌⼈として活躍する伊藤紺さん。この旅を題材に、短歌を詠み、エッセイも執筆いただきます。さらに各県ごとにゲストが登場。四国お遍路の旅を楽しみましょう！
伊藤紺
1993年、東京都生まれ。歌人。2016年から作歌をスタート。2019年に『肌に流れる透明な気持ち』、翌年に『満ちる腕』を私家版で刊行し、2022年に両作を短歌研究社より新装版として同時刊行。2023年12月に第3歌集『気がする朝』をナナロク社より刊行。現代の短歌ブームを牽引する存在として注目を集める。
